Intrigued by the array of characters in Four Horse Road? Join us as we invite Dr. Lai Chee Kien to share his historical insights and stories regarding the social, cultural and religious diversity of old downtown Singapore, and learn more about the lesser-known narratives of communities such as the karayuki-san and Indian convicts who were once part of the social fabric of this district.

About Dr. Lai Chee Kien (Speaker & Guide)

Dr. Lai Chee Kien is Adjunct Associate Professor at the Architecture and Sustainable Design Pillar, Singapore University of Technology and Design. He is a registered architect, and graduated from the National University of Singapore with an M.Arch. by research (1996), and a PhD in History of Architecture & Urban Design from the University of California, Berkeley (2005). He researches on histories of art, architecture, settlements, urbanism and landscapes in Southeast Asia. His publications include Building Merdeka: Independence Architecture in Kuala Lumpur, 1957-1966 (2007) and Recollections of Life in an Accidental Nation: Alfred Wong (2016). His co-authored work, Building Memories: People, Architecture, Independence was awarded the Singapore Book Award for Best Book Title in 2017.

关于赖启健博士 (演讲者及导览解说员)

赖启健博士,新加坡注册建筑师,新加坡国立大学建筑系硕士(1996),美国加州大学柏克莱建筑与都市设计系博士(2005)。目前任职于新加坡科技设计大学建筑与可持续设计专业。他的研究领域为东南亚艺术、建筑、聚落、都市化和景观的历史。他发行的书籍包括《Building Merdeka: Independence Architecture in Kuala Lumpur, 1957-1966》 (2007) 、《Recollections of Life in an Accidental Nation: Alfred Wong (2016) 他共同撰写的书《Building Memories: People, Architecture, Independence》在2017年荣获新加坡书籍奖。
